Before you are even offered a position to work from home for Lionbridge, you will need to take and pass their exam.  This is not only true if you are applying to be an Internet, Web Content, or Social Media Assessor but even if you are looking to work some of the Crowdsourcing jobs that Lionbridge offers through their Smart Crowd platform in data entry and so forth.  The test for the CrowdSourcing tasks is not as extensive because Lionbridge does not conduct interviews for this particular department in their company.
Any interested individuals must take and pass an online assessment before they are even considered for the position to work and complete assignments for the Smart Crowd at Lionbridge.

The exam that Lionbridge offers is the only way to determine whether an individual is a good fit or qualified for the series of tasks and job duties that they will be required to perform when they are hired.  All jobs offered through Lionbridge are Internet-based job positions allowing year-round opportunities for you to work from home.  For example, Lionbridge may offer jobs that include Multimedia Judge, Internet Search Administrator, Internet Assessor, and Social Media Internet Assessor.

I’ve read a review that said they read your emails & monitored your social media. Wondering how common that is? Thanks.

I would say that monitoring your social media accounts if very common for work at home employers. Not sure about the emails but you could ask others on our Facebook Group Workersonboard Community here.
